  • Second prize in urban open space planning competition in Braunschweig
  • 21-hectare site as an important component of the Bahnstadt district
  • Stephenson Höfe in three construction phases

Another competition success for holger meyer architektur – In the urban planning competition for the redesign of the main freight station in Braunschweig, our design, in collaboration with landscape architects Lützow7, was awarded second prize. The jury awarded three prizes and two commendations to a total of 19 interdisciplinary teams from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The task was to develop a sustainable urban development concept for the approximately 21-hectare site at the main freight station, which forms an important new urban building block within the railway town. Our design for the "Stephenson Höfe" reorganizes the currently heterogeneous use and urban structure. In three construction phases, existing structures will be integrated and supplemented with new ones. Different grain sizes and typologies enable a diverse range of residential options. A mixed-use, outwardly closed perimeter block development with commercial use on the sides facing the noise serves as passive sound insulation. In addition, a green belt filters the noise and connects the area to higher-level open spaces in the southwest and northeast directions.
