  • Urban and landscape planning reorganization of a sealed-off existing situation
  • Networking through green axis and neighborhood center with urban character

Our design for the conversion of the Rochdale Barracks in Bielefeld was awarded third prize in a restricted open competition. This marked the first success for the holger meyer urban unit, which was founded last year.

The redevelopment of the approximately 11-hectare site, which comprises the former Rochdale barracks and adjacent areas, is based on the north-south green axis or park area and a parallel main access axis. The anchor point of the new high-quality residential quarter is the green urban center with a neighborhood square and district center. Communal spaces, restaurants, and small businesses reinforce the urban character. Complemented by the west-east crossings, this creates a tranquil framework for the block-like building structures. This offers the opportunity to generate a variety of building typologies and residential forms. Historic buildings worth preserving are integrated into the context, as is the exposed Lonnerbach stream. Two eight-story high points accentuate the north and south of the site.
