In the invited competition for the inner-city district of Neue Weststadt in Esslingen, our design for the residential and commercial development of Block A received recognition.

RVI GmbH is planning a new urban district on the site of the former freight station. Block A marks the start of the district coming from the train station in the east. Five to seven stories will provide 7,380 m² of gross floor space for residential and commercial use. In addition to office and practice space on the first floor, there will be 45 residential units from the second floor upwards. A communal roof garden will serve as a meeting place for the residents of the 75% subsidized apartments. The design is unique in that it is a free-standing, solitary building, whereas a closed perimeter block development was originally planned. However, as future development of the idea section to the north is uncertain, we decided against a closed perimeter block development in favor of the master plan concept. This creates an open urban space and a sequence of squares that can be experienced. The outdoor facilities are clearly and calmly designed and connect all parts of the area without weakening their individual characters. The building in the concept section is planned as a wood-hybrid construction.
