  • 2nd prize in urban and building construction competition
  • Reorganization of the inner-city Beethoven area in Erlangen
  • Addition to closed block perimeter with simultaneous opening of the inner courtyard as a semi-public space

Our design for the redevelopment of the Beethoven Quarter in Erlangen was awarded second prize in an invited competition involving 15 participants.

The approximately 1.5-hectare site will become a perfectly tailored intermediary between the listed buildings to the east, the neighboring Himbeerpalast, and the cultural axis. The characteristic stepped design of the eight-story front building opposite the Himbeerpalast and the five-story building on Beethovenstraße blend harmoniously into the architectural environment and the adjacent urban spaces.
The existing "Banane" office building will remain a commercial space used primarily for offices and will be complemented by a new building dedicated to residential use, creating a closed block perimeter that repairs the urban space at this location. The entire block, deliberately conceived as a single unit, will be differentiated and sculpturally designed so that the block volume still retains an appropriate scale. The calm urban appearance of the exterior contrasts with the contoured green courtyard structure. A wave-shaped, green "terrace shelf" is positioned in front of the apartments. The block is divided into three courtyard-forming areas, with a meandering path crossing the semi-public inner courtyard, which was praised by the jury. Green communal terraces and gardens on the roofs of the residential buildings complement the generous green space.
