Cardinal and Chancellor inaugurate the Catholic Social Institute Michaelsberg Abbey in Siegburg

May 4, 2017

Today, Chancellor Merkel and Cardinal Rainer Woelki inaugurated the Catholic Social Institute (KSI), which will move to Michaelsberg near Siegburg. A new building has been constructed there next to the historic abbey. The design by meyerschmitzmorkramer, a modern cube, sets the tone for the future.

Anyone traveling to Siegburg can see the city's landmark, Michaelsberg Abbey, from afar. Founded in 1096, the monastery and its church sit imposingly on a hill in the middle of the city like a castle, enjoying panoramic views of the Rhine Valley. It is a place steeped in history with great appeal. Now, in May 2017, Michaelsberg Abbey shines in new splendor.

meyerschmitzmorkramer has extensively expanded the monastery into a conference center and demonstrates that, with respectful design, a historic building can be appropriately transformed into a modern facility with a feel-good factor. meyerschmitzmorkramer has also elegantly integrated a new building, the so-called Forum, creating a harmonious overall ensemble. A state-of-the-art conference center with 121 hotel rooms, a restaurant, and conference rooms.
