2nd prize in Heidelberg's Bahnstadt district

November 2, 2021

  • 2nd prize in the invited 2-stage competition
  • Neighborhood square with high point as entrance
  • Characteristic green axis connects inner courtyards and neighboring neighborhoods

Our design for the Czerny Quarter in Heidelberg was awarded second prize in the invited competition.

The building complex, with a gross floor area of approximately 81,000 m², marks the beginning of the Bahnstadt district. The jury praised the clear structure and order of the individual buildings and spaces. The mix of residential, office, and retail uses is located in the U-shaped new buildings, which are arranged in pairs of three blocks that are open to each other and slightly offset. A significant highlight is the 10-story office tower with an inviting neighborhood square to the east. The green east-west axis, which connects the inner courtyards and the neighboring neighborhoods, leads here as the entrance to the neighborhood. The jury also highlighted the varied, well-designed interior areas due to their high quality of stay and the differentiated use of the ground floor zones. A characteristic feature is the high-quality greening of this quiet inner courtyard area, which serves as a place of relaxation for all users. The greenery continues on the roofs of the commercial spaces on the first floor, where sheltered gardens are being created for the residents.

To the north, the building ensemble forms a clear urban edge to the railway tracks. The office buildings located there thus protect the residential buildings and inner courtyards in the southwest of the site from the noise emissions of rail traffic. The number of stories and building edges of the 6- to 7-story new buildings are based on the neighboring buildings to the west.
