Shelter Park is a landmark development located in the academic and research-heavy Naukova district of Kharkiv, near the Naukova Metro Station, providing robust connectivity via metro, buses, and trams. This project strategically merges parkland with a multi-use building, spanning five floors and offering around 200,000 square meters of gross floor space. It integrates green space by extending the park horizontally over the building’s roof, creating a 300-meter stretch of greenery atop a reinforced structure.
Designed to adapt over time, Shelter Park prioritizes flexibility, featuring a standardized grid that accommodates diverse uses, from education, healthcare, and cultural activities on the upper floors to industrial and storage facilities at the core. The two lowest levels include parking and a bus station, enhancing local connectivity. A main underground artery links the western main entrance directly to the Naukova Metro Station, lined with commercial spaces to foster continuous activity.
The design emphasizes resilience, with a strong outer facade for protection and a softer, transparent interior for an inviting atmosphere. The building is adaptable for various needs, including potential wartime shelter use, and is planned in phases to manage different construction schedules. Large roof windows allow natural light through conical courtyards, while these windows can be securely closed with concrete during conflict, serving as seating in peacetime.
Sustainability is a core focus, with green areas to regulate temperature, rainwater collection systems, wind turbines, and heat pumps supporting self-sufficiency. Estimated costs range between 400 to 600 million euros, reflecting its scale and forward-thinking design aimed at serving Kharkiv’s community and environment.
